As a coach, my clients will tell me they are concerned about what others think about them. For some, it's because they believe they are overweight and don't look good in their clothes and feel judged by people when they look at them. For others, it's a fear of trying something new and being afraid others will think they look like a fool or it's a ridiculous idea. Isn't it interesting what we conjure up in our heads with stories of what others "might" be thinking about us?
I once had a coach tell me that others are so concerned about what people are thinking of them, they don't have time to be thinking about me! Now that was an eye opener! And, so true.
However, I do know I have a God who thinks about all of us all the time. And, one of the most beautiful thoughts He has is that you are His masterpiece. He created you in His image. He created you for good works in Christ Jesus - Ephesians 2:10.
The day I really, really grasped this thought, it dawned on me that I had not taken care of His masterpiece. I realized I had actually been abusive to it throughout the years. I realized how critical I had been of my body; which then brought a really big "aha" moment. Every time I was critical of my body, God's creation, His masterpiece; I was being critical of Him!
This breakthrough brought me to my knees and to digging more and more into His Word. It brought me to some of my favorite scriptures:
Psalm 139:14 "I praise you, for I are fearfully and wonderfully made." When was the last time you praised God for creating you?
Ephesians 2:10 "For we are God's masterpiece (workmanship, poem) created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." What thoughts come to mind when you realize you are His masterpiece? His poem? No one else could have created you the way God did. What a beautiful, peaceful thought.
I Samuel 16:7 "...For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart." I will be honest, I want to look good physically - God gave us eyes to see. And, I truly believe that when we take care of ourselves physically, we can be our best spiritually? Yet, the first step in being our best spiritually, is to be sure our hearts are centered on God and His Son, Jesus the Christ.
I truly believe when my heart is focused on God & Jesus, I will want to take care of His gift, my body, my masterpiece, for Him. What about you? Are you taking care of your masterpiece for the right reasons? Is it only to look good, or is it because it's a gift from God?
So, every time you begin to be concerned about what other's are thinking, I invite you instead to think about how God sees you as His masterpiece and are you taking care of it for Him? When you do, what others might be thinking won't even matter.
