Spinning Backwards

Progress isn't always a straight line

As we step into the new year, I invite you to reflect on an unexpected truth: sometimes, progress comes from what feels like moving backward.

This morning during spin class, it felt like that - my instructor challenged us to spin backwards—something I would prefer not to do, because the bike doesn’t calculate distance, which made it feel stagnant. However, I knew the hidden benefits this unconventional exercise offered. And, I knew I could add a mile or so to my total at the end, spinning backwards, though it might seem counterproductive, actually targets muscles that are often left unused. The work on the legs and glutes, areas we often overlook, highlighted the subtle yet essential progress we’re making, even when it feels like we’re going nowhere. It’s a reminder that forward motion isn’t the only measure of growth.

As I thought about this while spinning backwards, it took me to a deeper level of understanding. In life, as in spin class, sometimes it’s crucial to embrace the unusual paths. The invaluable lessons lie not only in the destination but in the journey, however unconventional and directionless it may appear. I encourage you to embrace the process and appreciate the subtle changes and growth that occur when you feel you’re spinning backwards.

Trust, and remember that every step, even if perceived as a step back, contributes to your personal strength and development. In the end, progress isn’t always a straight line. Sometimes the most rewarding milestones are achieved on the path less traveled. Harness the unexpected, and let it guide you to new strengths and perspectives.

I decided to treat the dirty window as one of my daily tasks. I wrote in my planner on a specific day and time when I would clean that window! I’m grinning as I write this thinking, "I scheduled a time to clean the window?"; yet that’s how I knew I would get it done.

When we got to the top deck, I was reminded that the rock-climbing wall was there. I watched as some of my friends climbed, and I knew I wanted to get to the top and ring the bell! What about you, what’s something you are wanting to achieve?
