In a recent blog, September 17, I shared about "Comfort Food." On September 25, when I read my daily devotional, it really made me think - it shared about God being our comforter! I began to think about the choice of physical comfort food or God's comfort food, the Bible. I had mentioned in the Sept 17 blog about choosing God over food, however; something about the scripture really touched my heart.
In II Corinthians 1:3-4 we read "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God."
When I read the words, "so we may be able to comfort those...." I began to cry. I really don't know why those words touched me so much as I read them. What came to my mind was how selfishly I was focused for 40 years on my challenge, when what really needed to be happening was me to allow God to be my healer (Exodus 15:26), allow Him to comfort me so I would be able to comfort others!!!
There are millions in the world who are suffering & needing comfort and they don't know where to turn. As a Christian, when I allow myself to be comforted by God, I will then be able to comfort others.
I then thought again about the blog "Comfort Food" and realized how so many turn to food for the comfort instead of turning to the word of God. And, if we will be honest with ourselves, the food only comforts for a short time - it's like a drug - it's helps for a while, and then you need more - it becomes a vicious cycle.
When you turn to the word of God for your "comfort food", it not only feeds you at the time you read and meditate, it will continue to "feed" you your entire life. When you continue to "feed" on the Word of God, it will comfort you anytime you want. It's like an instant comfort, you can bring to remembrance what you have read. You can:
- write down your favorite scriptures and keep them with you
- download a Bible app on your phone & read anytime you want
- get a friend you can share a favorite scripture with each day
- be a part of a texting group like I am - I receive a scripture every morning
As a Christian Certified Grief Coach, I realize how important it is to have someone listen to you, guide you through your grief and glean from the Word of God and use it for a guide.
What pain or challenge are you facing in your life right now? Are you turning to food for comfort or the Word of God? My prayer is you will turn to God and allow Him to comfort you so you will then be able to comfort others. How beautiful this concept is!
